The 1st T20I match between India and New Zealand was called off due to incessant rain. The Men in Blue have a strenuous task on their hands as most of their senior players are not part of the team. This Series is quite pivotal for India as it is considered to be a new era for India.
The Selection Panel’s decision to make Hardik Pandya as the skipper is an interesting move as we have seen Pandya win the IPL 2022 for Gujarat Titans (GT). The flamboyant all-rounder’s game has improved immensely since the IPL as he knows when to attack and when to play the waiting game.
Ravichandran Ashwin On Squad
Ravichandran Ashwin was seen speaking on his YouTube channel and made some interesting remarks about the squad. “As far as I am concerned, Shubman Gill is a lock at the top of the order. Who is going to be the second opener? Ishan Kishan or Rishabh Pant? Even Wasim Jaffer tweeted that we will see the best of Rishabh Pant if he bats at the top of the order. Ishan has been travelling a lot with the team but he is not getting extended run as a player,” said Ravichandran Ashwin
“Anyway, Shreyas Iyer at 3, and Suryakumar Yadav at 4 are a lock. There will be a temptation to send Suryakumar Yadav at 3. But I think Shreyas has earned his right. So, Shreyas will go at three and Surya will bat at 4,” he stated.
“Will Sanju Samson finish an innings? Or will he be used in the middle order to give impetus, take on the spinners, play his pulls, and use the short square boundaries? Or will Sanju Samson get a chance? he added.
“If you send Rishabh Pant at the top, we won’t have any left-handers in the middle order. Not having a left-hander in the middle order is also highly spoken about. Having a left-right combination in the middle is important in T20s. Is there a left-hand middle-order option available? he added.
“The only other option left is Washington Sundar. I don’t know whether they will bat him at number 5. If they don’t see him in that role, I don’t know where else he will fit in this squad. Remember, this is a comeback for Washington Sundar as well,” he concluded.
Great Chance for Sanju Samson
It would be interesting to see whether Sanju Samson make the playing 11 after missing out on T20 WC. Samson has shown great hitting prowess and he has to make sure that he makes the most of the chances he gets.
Sanju would be well aware of the fact that he is not guaranteed a place in the team as there’s already Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan present. Head Coach VVS Laxman will have to be spot on with the selection as New Zealand would expose India’s middle order.
