Pakistan National Cricket Team batting legend Javed Miandad, while reacting to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah’s Asia Cup 2023 remark, said that politics shouldn’t be brought into cricket.
After the 91st Annual General Meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which was held on October 18, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council, said that the Asia Cup 2023 will be held at a neutral venue as Team India can’t travel to Pakistan.
“The Asia Cup 2023 will be held at a neutral venue. I am saying this as ACC President. We [India] can’t go there [to Pakistan], they can’t come here. In the past also, Asia Cup has been played at a neutral venue,” Shah told the media.
The statement of the BCCI didn’t sit well with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the PCB issued a strongly-worded statement on Wednesday. Also, the Pakistan Cricket Board hinted that Jay Shah’s remark could impact Pakistan’s participation in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which is set to take place in India.
“The overall impact of such statements have the potential to split the Asian and international cricketing communities, and can impact Pakistan’s visit to India for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and future ICC Events in India in the 2024-2031 cycle,” PCB stated.
Ye ICC kis cheez ke liye hai? Aap Asia Cup naa karo na – Javed Miandad
In a video shared on the Cricket Pakistan YouTube channel, the Pakistan batting Javed Miandad reacted to Shah’s Asia Cup remark. He said:
“Ye ICC kis cheez ke liye hai? Aap Asia Cup naa karo na. Ham toh Asia me hi aate hain. Aapas me khelenge toh fayda hoga na. Cricket me politics ko nahi laana chahiye. Main abhi bhi request karta hu sabse.. aapke players khelte hain.
“Varna aap cricket band karein, ye pick and choose karna galat hai. (What’s the point of ICC? Scrap the Asia Cup if that’s the case. We are in Asia. We will only benefit from playing each other. You shouldn’t bring politics into cricket. I request everyone for the sake of players. This pick-and-choose is wrong, you should stop playing cricket otherwise).”
“8-10 teams hi cricket khelti hain ab. Agar aapko cricket ko upar lekar aana hai, sports me aisi cheezein nahi honi chahiye. (Only 8-10 teams play cricket. If you want to take cricket further, you shouldn’t have such things happening),” Miandad further said.
